The setting is the Tsukishima district of Tokyo where the Summer Olympic Games will be held in five years. A small old-fashioned confectionary shop, “Sakuraya” stands as a remnant of the past amid the rapidly changing cityscape. Akiko Sakurai has been running the shop on a shoestring for over 50 years, along with her grandson, Taro (33) whom she raised form childhood after he lost his parents in a traffic accident. With them also is Reiko, a single mother who has returned to Tsukishima with her child. Seemingly left behind by a fast-moving world, Taro appears as something of a “loser” who finds himself reexamining his lost childhood in an effort to move forward. Life takes a strange turn when his grandmother, Akiko, receives a letter that she is being sued for damages because her cat, Mi-chan, allegedly scratched up a neighbor’s luxury car. What should be an easy case to win turns into a fumbling mess at the hands of Taro who can’t seem to win for losing in this wacky yet endearing and slightly heartwarming late-night drama.

In 2019, public anger at media excess has led to censorship of television, newspapers, the internet, books, movies, and music under the 'Media Betterment Act'. To fight the armed 'Betterment Squads' that go around destroying objectionable materials, the nation's libraries have formed their own para-military 'Library Defense'. Iku Kasahara is a new recruit to the defense, where her instructor and squad leader is Atsushi Dojo. At first repelled by his by-the-book approach to leadership, she is gradually won over by his commitment to their battle for 'books' and 'the freedom to know'.

Tasuku, the young brother of Ataru who never appeared in the television drama emerges here as the lead suspect in a serial killing case.
Ataru flies from New York to rescue his brother and discover the truth behind the murders which bear a strong resemblance to the "Crucifixion Murders" that shocked the United States in 1997. He is joined in the effort by 1st Crime Division investigator, Sawa, and ex-cop and current private detective, Maiko, for a reunion of the "Ataru Trio." But their movement is checked by Ataru's arch rival, who received the same special skills FBI training as he, and who seeks a final showdown.

Autistic savant, Ataru, has a very unique gift. He is capable of uttering “words” that help the police in their investigations “discover, observe, perceive and deduce” evidence they had hitherto failed to notice. In fact, like a chess genius, Ataru has the ability to think tens of moves ahead of the average person. While it’s obvious to anyone that his favorite foods are tomato ketchup and honey mustard, Ataru struggles with communication, often speaking in conundrums, behaving erratically and even lapsing into hysteric fits. While his uniquely-wired brain enables him to fire off “key words” that are integrally linked to solving crime, the task of piecing his utterances together like a jigsaw puzzle falls to Detective Maiko Ebina and superior officer, Sawa. Together, they create an unlikely and dynamic trio solving one case after another.

Ataru is serving out a prison sentence in Kyushu for having killed a police officer. Though innocent, circumstance forced him to accept the conviction. As the time on his sentence ticks down to its last year, he is informed that his daughter - born between him and his girlfriend, Yuki - has come down with a serious heart disease. Rather than serve out the rest of his sentence, Ataru determines to escape together with three other wrongly-convicted inmates and a young girl, Sakura, who has run away from her abusive parents. Fueled by love and a yearning for justice, the escapees head toward Tokyo in a 1,000 kilometer journey up the Japanese archipelago; a “breakout” in search of hope.

A high school student and genius hacker, Fujimaru a.k.a. “Falcon,” uses his sophisticated hacking techniques to indict the fraudulent acts of evil villains. In order to save his family, friends, and the entire world, he fights against “Bloody Monday”, the worst and most evil form of viral terrorism. As spies of the terrorist institution infiltrate into schools and police organizations, and the terrorist threat grows through a chain of treacherous acts, how will Falcon outsmart them in their intellectual battles?

Abandoned by his mother and having had to fend for himself, Ryuu is one of many Japanese youths that have turned to a life of petty crime in order to survive in Japanese society. Life on the streets has given him a tough exterior, but it is his kind heart and his dislike for what he has become that wins over a local beauty and helps him take his first steps towards a better life. When an overzealous and less than ethical police inspector fingers Ryuu for a crime he didn’t commit, he is resigned to accept his fate. However, help emerges to give him the strength to fight for his freedom from an unexpected source: a victim of one of his past crimes.
