TBS’s “Around 40” Won Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards’ Special Award

TBS’s “Around 40” a huge hit with great social impact in Japan last year, won the 15th Shanghai Television Festival Magnolia Awards’ “Special Award for Asian TV Series.” Other titles nominated were Nippon Television’s “SAITOU san” Fuji Television’s “Galileo” and TV Asahi’s “Aibou.” A majority Chinese member panel of judges praised the drama series by saying “This story of three women around age 40 skillfully depicts how this generation’s views regarding career, romance and marriage differ substantially from those of traditional Japanese society. These intricacies are conveyed in a style that is sensitive to the realities of everyday life.” Actress SAKURA who played Maki Ogata and Producer Mahoko Takanari attended the ceremony held on Friday, June 12 in Shanghai and were applauded by the audience.

The International Drama Festival in Tokyo, which was launched in 2007 through a collaboration between drama series producing entities such as TV broadcasters, movie producers, and other copyright holders, announced the forming of a partnership with the “Shanghai Television Festival” and the “Seoul Drama Awards” last year in an attempt to enhance international exchange and Asian presence through an alliance between the three countries. The Special Award is granted to both Korean dramas and Japanese dramas as the part of this alliance.
