Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) has reached a content streaming agreement with The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. The two companies announced that TBS’s prime-time Sunday night drama series TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room (originally broadcast in Japan from July to September 2021) will stream worldwide beginning Wednesday, October 27, everywhere Disney+’s new STAR content hub is available. TOKYO MER is the first Japanese drama to be distributed by Disney. The two companies have agreed to collaborate on similar projects in the future.

Disney+ is The Walt Disney Company’s global subscription video on-demand streaming service. In addition to box-office hits and popular titles from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, Disney+’s STAR content hub, available in Japan from October 27, will help expand Disney+’s huge lineup of dramas, movies, original content, and programming from around the world, including Japan, to over 16,000 titles.

DX Business Division President Yayoi Nakatani commented:
We’re very pleased that Disney has confidence in the TBS Group’s creative expertise and has joined hands with us on this global distribution initiative. TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room has been a huge hit in Japan, both on broadcasting and streaming, so we would like as many people as possible around the world to see it. As part of our growth strategy, TBS has set a goal to expand into global markets. We are looking forward to delivering our content to people around the world, and strengthening our position in the global content market.

Ryohei Suzuki, star of TOKYO MER, commented:
It makes me very happy that TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room will stream on STAR on Disney+ alongside many of my favorite movies of all time, such as The Avengers and Toy Story. I’m excited that through this distribution agreement this title will get to be seen by many more people around the world.

About TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room
TBS’s prime-time Sunday night drama series TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room, starring Ryohei Suzuki, is a medical drama about an emergency response team outfitted with leading-edge medical technology and a large mobile operating theatre to respond to major accidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies. The mission of MER is simple: Save every life. The team is headed by a brilliant young ER doctor (Kota Kitami, played by Suzuki) whose mantra, “Time is our worst enemy,” drives him to put his life on the line to rescue those in imminent danger. He is joined by Nao Otowa, a doctor from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, which is secretly scheming to dismantle MER. Then there’s Tokyo Mayor Azusa Akatsuka, who created MER and is gunning to become Japan’s first female prime minister. Amid these machinations, the members of TOKYO MER are always the first on the scene whenever lives are at stake! Suzuki is joined by a star-studded cast that includes Kento Kaku, who plays Nao Otowa; Ayami Nakajo, who plays cardiovascular surgical resident and MER team member Hina Tsurumaki, as well as Nanao, Riisa Naka, and Yuriko Ishida. This show is dedicated to the brave, self-sacrificing frontline professionals who continue to fight COVID-19 and save lives, and to all those facing adversity around the world.
