2022.03.04

Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) and Netflix LLC agreed last year to work together on three new titles destined for worldwide release. By leveraging TBS's production expertise and vast range of IP, such as dramas and variety shows, and Netflix’s world-leading streaming services reaching more than 190 countries and regions, the two companies aim to break out of the conventional framework of broadcasting/streaming to deliver compelling entertainment content worldwide.

The partnership’s debut offering was TBS’s Sunday night drama series Japan Sinks: People of Hope, starring Shun Oguri. Broadcast starting at 9pm on Sunday 10 October last year, the show streamed worldwide on Netflix every week from midnight JST on the day of airing (three hours after the start of broadcasting in Japan). Next came The Future Diary, a hit romance-reality show that originated as a TBS variety show and went on to become a social phenomenon. Relaunched as a Netflix original series, it has streamed worldwide since last December. The third project is the Netflix series Let's Get Divorced, co-written by screenwriters Kankuro Kudo and Shizuka Oishi, who have collaborated on a number of hits. Produced by Aki Isoyama of TBS Sparkle, it is scheduled for simultaneous worldwide release in 2023. The cast is truly star-studded!

■ Netflix series Let's Get Divorced

This romantic comedy centers on a married couple whose passion has cooled. Obstacles on both sides prevent a speedy divorce, but the partners share a firm resolve to dissolve their union, and join forces to achieve that goal.

Tori Matsuzaka plays the lead role of the husband, dull-witted philanderer Taishi Shoji, a third-generation politician from a privileged background. Riisa Naka plays his wife, Yui Kurosawa, an actress who became the nation’s official sweetheart following her breakout role in a drama series called Miko-chan.

The series also features distinctive supporting roles played by a talented cast. Ryo Nishikido plays Kyoji Kano, a mysterious, self-styled artist exuding sex appeal. Yuka Itaya plays Kaoru Indo, the spineless Taishi’s capable lawyer and no-nonsense mentor. Koji Yamamoto plays Go Soda, Taishi’s silver-tongued, golden-voiced political nemesis, and Arata Furuta plays Henry K Ishihara, Taishi’s wife’s smart but shady attorney.

Producer Aki Isoyama has worked with Kankuro Kudo on numerous hit dramas including Ikebukuro West Gate Park and Kisarazu Cat's Eye. Chief Director Fuminori Kaneko has worked on high-profile films such as The Full-Time Wife EscapistDon't Forget Me and Story of My Family!!!

Comments by creators and cast

Kankuro Kudo (Screenplay)
The casting is truly impressive. The husband is the Japanese equivalent of a congressman. He’s a good-looking guy from a posh background, but he’s not always firing on all cylinders. His wife is a feisty popular actress who earned her success through hard work and talent. Although the show portrays the joys and sorrows of a marriage that’s gone flat, the tone keeps things light.

The leads are Tori Matsuzaka and Riisa Naka. My co-writer Shizuka Oishi and I have great confidence in both these actors, and so far they’ve raised no questions about the script, which is amazing! Total trust on both sides!

I’m delighted to be working with Ryo Nishikido again. This time he’s in quite a sexy role. I’ve always wanted to work with Koji Yamamoto and Yuka Itaya, so I’m looking forward to that. And then there’s Arata Furuta, who’s always a pleasure to work with. As ever, I’m grateful for everyone’s support.

Wow, I can’t wait to watch this show!

Shizuka Oishi (Screenplay)
When I worked with Matsuzaka and Naka before, I was blown away by their acting skills! I’m so happy to be reunited with them. The supporting actors are also superb performers. In fact I've never known a cast as strong as this! It really is dream casting.

Kudo and I really went all-out on this project, and the result is a punchy, vibrant script. We follow the stories of the two main characters, their mothers, their lovers, their lawyers, and politicians, secretaries and the Ehime prefectural electorate, although we don’t know yet what final destiny awaits them.

And personally, I’m expecting great things of Ryo Nishikido, who I’m working with for the first time.

Tori Matsuzaka
When I first heard that this was an original story co-written by Shizuka Oishi and Kankuro Kudo, just the fact that they would be co-writing the script made the project exciting to me. I just knew it would be absolutely fascinating.

When I actually read the finished script, I recognized it as a true masterpiece.

This is the first time I’ve worked with Riisa Naka, but after the screen test and the read-through, I felt total confidence in her as an actress and I knew we would make a convincing on-screen married couple, even though the show itself is not about marital bliss.

The rest of the cast are also highly distinctive, consummate professionals who will add plenty of depth and interest to the show, so I can’t wait until shooting starts. It would be great if it prompts people to think about the nature and importance of marriage.

Many thanks for your support.

Riisa Naka
In this production, I’ll be playing the role of an actress. It's a really interesting script with a great mix of Kudo-san's way of seeing the world, and Oishi-san’s sparkiness, but it looks a bit challenging to perform.... I don’t think I look very much like a starlet, so I just hope I can pull it off. I’m looking forward to being on set with the rest of the cast.

Ryo Nishikido
I’m honored to be working on a show again. I’m looking forward to working with Oishi for the first time, and I’m very happy to be working on another show written by Kudo. I’ll bring my “A game” to the role of Kyoji Kano in Let's Get Divorced, co-written by two renowned scriptwriters. It’s so exciting to be working alongside amazing and distinguished performers like Tori Matsuzaka and Riisa Naka.

In these dark times, I’m confident that we’ll succeed in creating a show that will bring everyone a few much-needed laughs. Look out for the release date!

Yuka Itaya
I play Kaoru Inden, a lawyer. You can call me Inden-chan if you like. The script is already a blast. I'm sure this story will really blossom when we start shooting. I can’t wait to watch the show myself. Anyway, I hope I can make Inden-chan enjoyable!

Thanks for your support.

Koji Yamamoto
This is the first script to be co-written by Kankuro Kudo and Shizuka Oishi, so when I read it, I kept wondering who wrote which parts. I also found myself speculating about whether certain characters and storylines might be based on real people and events. There are some brilliant surprises and plot twists in there. But the producers will be mad at me if I drop any spoilers, so I’ll limit myself to a few words. When you go to the ballot box, go Soda! Go Soda, Go Soda! Give me your vote!

Arata Furuta
Well, I’ve got a whole bunch of lines to learn, so it looks like I’ve got my work cut out. But hey, it's Tori (Matsuzaka) and Riisa (Naka), so they'll hang in there for sure. And this will be my first time working with Yuka Itaya, so I’m looking forward to that.

STORY
He’s a rookie politician, she’s an actor. Five years down the line, the Shojis’ marriage is on the rocks. At work and in their public life, they seem the very model of a loving couple. But at home, they converse almost exclusively by text, and are hardly ever in the same room.

Passion has cooled, but due to family pressure, sponsorship deals and other obstacles, untying the knot will not be easy. Nevertheless, both parties are determined to divorce, and they begin to work together towards this goal.
