July 1999. The world is in turmoil. Nostradamus prophecies are on everybody’s lips. Chaos, violence and fear rule the day. In crazy times, a band of special men prepare to rise to the challenge and rescue mankind from the coming Armageddon.

Shoen Matsumoto is both a trained paramedic and Buddhist monk attached to a hospital. While providing emergency care straight from the mortuary while still in monk clothes unnerves some patients, Shoen nevertheless proves fully devoted to saving lives, and if that’s not possible, performing rites of spiritual passage for those that die. Dedicated to both roles, he finds himself often at odds with other doctors and colleagues over the best care for patients while bringing solace that only he can to bereaved families. As a doctor, his mission is to save lives. As a monk, it’s saving souls. Growing through this existential struggle, Shoen gives us a life-size drama in which to reflect on the true meaning of life and death.

Having just graduated from high school with no idea of what to do next, 18-year-old Yuki finds himself suddenly cutting timber very far from his native home in a remote mountain village where cell phones don't work, no convenience stores exist and there aren't any young people. The work is extremely laborious and dangerous, and he soon has had enough. Looking for a way to fabricate some excuse that would allow him to escape his circumstances, Yuki instead begins to feel a kindred spirit developing between him and his mountain colleagues, though all of them are eccentric. And he gradually sees the attraction and beneficial nature of "forestry" work with its ability to look 100 years into the future.
