A total of 55 million copies of the popular original comic have been published, and the story has been turned into a movie and TV animation. In 2001, it was remade as a TV drama series in Taiwan, and has been broadcast in 13 countries worldwide, achieving high ratings. Producer Katsuaki Setoguchi based his casting on the characters as portrayed in the original manga. “By showing these kids growing up together, and their social interactions in all their clumsiness,” he says, “I wanted to ask, what is really important in life, and how do we live true to ourselves, and love another person?”
