Tokyo 2023. Japan’s prime minister announces a plan to store contaminated material in deep-sea strata while entrusting a team of young technocrats to protect Japan’s future. Meanwhile, the public is alarmed by sensational magazine articles predicting the sinking of the Kanto plain owing to the disappearance of an island off the Izu coast. With demonstrators in the streets, a young government official Amami tries to restore order just as a corruption scandal linking the government to a profitable eco-business firm erupts. When Amami and a government colleague escape for a scuba diving trip, they encounter an earth-shattering event.

Four grown sisters return to life under one roof in the Hanawa home, headed by their “hunk” of a father and perennially girlish mother (who adores her husband and never doubts for a moment that his feelings are mutual). Although raised under the example of a seemingly model marriage, the “four Hanawa sisters” themselves are either divorced, devoutly single, in the market for a husband or simply unlucky in love. The second eldest daughter, Takemi, is the “black sheep” of the family who returns home after multiple divorces and three kids in tow. Having lived her life as honest to her own feelings as possible, she can’t help but stir trouble - leading to some hilarious predicaments - and always commands the center of attention, earning her such nicknames as “problem child”, “love-starved man-killer” and “she-devil.” “Marriage”, however, is the constant operative word in this domestic drama of women in search of a formula to happiness.

The Edo Period, the world of the samurai. The youth Narimichi, the son of a Shogun, who has thus always lived a very restricted life, and the wild girl Yu, spirited away from her mountain village as a baby and raised living free in the mountains. These two, whose circumstances are such that they should never meet, come together before the miraculous ‘lightning tree’, and embark upon a doomed love affair. Knowing they will never be together, they seek all the more to go deep into each other’s hearts. Since neither has ever been in love before, their encounter with it brings spiritual growth. For those of the modern age, far more free than that in which Narimichi and Yu lived, the film will express the value and wonder of love from the heart, without fear of being hurt. This is the story of a miracle of love, between two people who should never have met.
