An extremely fearful youth, Tenma Hokai, grudgingly runs a ghost extermination agency only because he hails from a long genealogy of those with special abilities to communicate with spirits. When a request comes in, he and his company colleagues strap on special devices and head for the haunted sites in what is a Japanese version of Ghostbusters. Or so one would hope. But alas, the weak-nerved Tenma can hardly bear the thought of encountering ghosts and tries instead to hear their grievances and rectify the problems that keep them in the corporal world, even through gentle persuasion. Meanwhile, Tenma must contend with a lady who follows him around, speak to his deceased father through dreams, a bothersome detective, a parade of quirky clients and spirits in what is far from a tale of horror but rather a hilarious comedy with comical interplay that also delivers a serious treatment on the meaning of "life" in a completely original drama.

In a house on the outskirts of Tokyo, there lives a family of eight. Such a large family is rare these days, however not one of them is related by blood. They all lost a loved one in the same holiday accident. Moved by the suggestion that they all move in together, they have gathered in this house. Each has their own issues and it makes for the start of a tumultuous home life, but the eight grow closer together as a family. This is a human drama full of heart and mixed with laughs and tears depicting a group of deeply wounded people beginning to believe in tomorrow and live life more positively.

Toji, a manager of a food section in a medium-sized department store, has to put up with a tough boss that makes every day a real struggle. But things start to look up for him though when he meets a pretty elevator girl named Nao. Just as he is starting to enjoy a new-found happiness at work, a new account manager from an advertising agency visits Toji’s division, and it is none other than Toji’s ex-girlfriend from university, Makoto. Toji is surprised to see her again but Makoto treats him as if she has never met him before. Now dealing with a tough job and caught in the middle of a jealous Nao and Makoto who dumped him, things couldn’t get much worse for Toji!

Shu is a senior at a low-ranked university. Kotomi is a struggling model. Keiko has a desk job at a small company. All of them are former classmates from junior high school. All of them are not satisfied with their current lives and want to find something better but can’t seem to. Reflecting many of the conflicts and anxieties of today’s youth, these three turn to each other for support to find the meaning in their lives for which they are searching.

A visiting substitute teacher for a woman on maternity leave, Sentaro, shakes things up with his passionate and direct teaching style and meets resistance from the entire school. Motoko, the daughter of his landlord is one of his colleagues and strongest critics. Another colleague asks Sentaro to fix him up with Motoko, and Sentaro is more than happy to oblige since he has fallen for her sister. But Motoko’s father senses that Sentaro and Motoko would actually be good together and tries to fix them up! Facing pressure in work and in love, Sentaro must figure out if his current path is the best one.

His parents having passed away, 21 year-old Natsuo must now take care of his teenage younger brother and sister and run the family bike shop. It is a heavy burden which he handles with an even measure of discipline and kindness. A shy young woman with a heart condition is impressed by his positive outlook and toughness, and she begins to help him with his responsibilities. It is while learning to deal with daily life and family crisis alike that their love begins to bloom.

Yuji is a twenty year old boxer who makes ends meet by working part-time at a flower shop. Although he works beside her everyday, he hides a deep affection for Kaori, the manager of the shop. Tohko is a sincere and active young woman that works at a local crepe shop. Her initial meeting with Yuji in a video store ends quickly with both ridiculing the other's video selections. However, Tohko notices him training in the park and falls in love with him instantly after seeing this serious and determined side of Yuji. Her persistence brings her to his debut-boxing match, but as she cheers for him she soon realizes his heart belongs to Kaori.

Abandoned by his mother and having had to fend for himself, Ryuu is one of many Japanese youths that have turned to a life of petty crime in order to survive in Japanese society. Life on the streets has given him a tough exterior, but it is his kind heart and his dislike for what he has become that wins over a local beauty and helps him take his first steps towards a better life. When an overzealous and less than ethical police inspector fingers Ryuu for a crime he didn’t commit, he is resigned to accept his fate. However, help emerges to give him the strength to fight for his freedom from an unexpected source: a victim of one of his past crimes.

Three tales raise unsettling questions about the central qualities of being human. In one, a father is torn between love for his son and the desire for revenge, while a second examines the twisted love of a teacher for his female colleague. The third story delves into the complex affections hidden within a bully.
